Opening Error

Once again, we’ll be playing some chess at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company starting at 6pm this week (note the earlier time).  Last week, we played the long, long game, and all of us had only one game we played.

This week, let’s change it up and play a timed game with 20 minutes each. We’ll still learn much, but we’ll have an opportunity to play a few more games this way.

An Error in the Opening

Last week, a game I was in had the following opening sequence of moves.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. d3

This put the position as follows.

Ruy Lopez: Berlin Defense

The error came with black’s response 4. … d5. Not noticed in the game by white, this now creates a knight pin on c6, which removes the defender of the e5 pawn. A good move for white now is 5. Nxe5 which will put white at a slight advantage at the early stage of the game. A better move for black would be 4. … Bc5 putting pressure on the d4 square and beginning an attack on the f2 pawn.
